making stories and worlds.

I am Creative Writing Student at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). My work spans comic absurdity, drama, and science fiction. Alongside my studies, I am an ambassador for NTU’s Writing Reading and Pleasure programme, which encourages and cultivates the literary arts across campus by providing workshops, and opportunities to share and perform original work. I am published in and edited, the anthology All About Love, a project to promote positivity in NTU, inspired by Musa Okwonga’s In the End it Was All About Love. I was Editor in Chief for Snare, a student created little magazine created as part of our course. My commitment to writing earned me a summer scholarship, in which I was tutored by the likes of Sara Bodinar, Panya Banjoko, and Ashley Hickson-Lovence, on scripts, performance, and novellas. I have performed my work at various events, livestreams, open mics, and have been fortunate to open for MC Angel.

PROJECTS

THE CAVE

Theia insists that here friend hasn’t just signed off, or closed her account, she is missing, ‘gone’. You’ve only just joined The Cave, but strange things start unfolding as you learn more about this place. Will you find Theia’s friend or something far more unsettling?

Mystery is unfolding in The Cave; someone has gone missing but no one seems to care. A screenshot of the final game.

Building a story

A digital branching narrative, which I coded and co-wrote during the second year of my Creative Writing BA. The story is set on a fictional social media platform The Cave, and explores themes of identity and technology, playing off the allegory of Plato’s Cave. From a technical standpoint, the project required coding a system which allowed narrative looping, an infinite number of narrative branches, and conditional choices that could change, lock, or open new choices for the player character. I also had to integrate sound, images, and text into a seamless experience mimicking a social media platform. Our team of two had to outline, plan, produce images, write the script, and code the project within a tight four-month schedule.

Choice and complexity

Our ambition to create a complex story meant creating a system which could handle that. On the right you can see a visual representation of how the story was organised. I am looking to use this technology going forward to make projects even larger in scope, that allow the players to have a genuine impact on the stories in novel and interesting ways

The branching narrative visualised in a comprehensive flow chart.

I am currently in the process of reimagining the game, adding new assets, exploring new narratives, and fine tuning the experience.

SNARE

Expect the unexpected.

What is Snare?

Snare is a little magazine exploring the meaning of truth. Reality and fiction often blend, between Snare’s binding you will find short stories, poetry, and flash fiction tied together by myth. At its core, Snare is about experimentation and questioning the status quo.

You can find out more and download a digital copy here.

Snare's front and back cover, designed and illustrated by Antonia Stassi.
A two page spread of Snare's contents, including the poems Overturn the election by Andrew Taylor, and Against North Korea by Rory Waterman.

Making Snare

Snare was made as part of my Creative Writing BA. As Editor in Chief of Snare, I gained insight into the production and launch of a physical publication. The experience tested my knowledge, organisational abilities, and along the way I improved my interpersonal skills.
